Mud Soup - The Lake on a Gray Winter's Day

Into each life some rain must fall, some days must be dark and dreary.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Gray, dreary, and cold days have visited us lately. Bob and I stole 24 hours and drove out to the lake on Saturday. We found the brief respite, in spite of the same weather, most welcome.

Our buddy the osprey greeted us from his perch on the rope swing.

The Llano River had flooded with all the rain bringing lots of silt downstream. Chocolate milk. Glad it's winter as I wouldn't stick my toe in that mix. I'll wait for it to move on down and settle. No seeing the bottom for a few days.

The water so still the Man Wall gave off a perfect reflection.

With the wind chill in the 20's (yes, I know we are sissies) I didn't spend much time talking to my trees. They seemed a tad frozen anyway. Eyes glazed open. No napping in the hammock on this cold day.

Bob worked on a presentation for Monday.
I did nothing.

Six more weeks of winter. I'm ready for it to be over - the flowers to bloom. The grass to green. The water to clear and the sun to shine. Dreary days. I love them every now and then, but I'm ready to save money on the heating bill.

  1. These are the days that feel long and dreary; but, our good earth is working, preparing deep roots, looking for the days to send out shoots to greet the sunshine.

  2. Our river has been high for the last couple of weeks and looks similar to your chocolate milk. Just mix in big chunkes of ice.

I am with you on the wishes for spring and flowers.

  3. Winter is depressing me too. I can't wait for the trees to regrow their leaves and to be able to step outside the door without shivering.

  4. Grey days are my downfall. Once I lived in Kiev, Ukraine for a year and during the middle of winter we went 30 days without seeing the sun. On the other hand, here in Colorado every day is sunny, bright blue skies, even during the winter. And I pray for snow!

  5. Ahhhhh...out at the lake in Austin. What a life! Next, you're going to be teasing me with Barton Springs. Or bluebonnets. I'm jealous!

  6. Hi Joanne

you are fortunate to have the lake to visit as a respite from the winter.
I imagine you can't wait to be sitting on that pontoon again...

    Is that osprey real?

    Happy days

  8. It's so pretty...but so bitter. I love the look of winter more than I love the feel of winter.

I like the chocolate milk river!

  9. We've made it to winter's midpoint...it's all downhill from here...waiting to hear what Puxatawnee Phil predicts...

  10. I thought about you when I saw that system with all the rain that was coming your way. After last summer's drought, the rain should be welcomed, but always seems to come too much too fast! The man wall reflects nicely in the water -two for the price of one!

  11. Just heard on the news that Phil, the groundhog in PA is predicting a longer winter. I guess that means a couple more rainy days and continued highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s here in L.A. Oh the misery of cold, grey winters.

    I'm sick of winter, also.

  16. My sentiments exactly - oh for a bit of warm sun - still six weeks is not so long to wait.

  22. ('ve never seen this post until tonight. I have to screw around to get to your latest anyhow. Hope someone comes visiting who can fix that.

Yeah, I don't think I would go swimming in that either. Where are the ducks and the swan?

  24. Wow, that water is really muddy. I'm ready for green, too. The days are getting longer and I swear I hear spring birds out there in the sunshine. Or maybe I am hallucinating.
