Lazily Awaiting the New Year

New Year's Day: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.
Mark Twain

I don't know about you, but between Christmas and New Years I have a difficult time accomplishing anything. The empty boxes from Christmas Eve and all the ribbons adorn the family room floor, albeit stacked neatly by my husband. I still have Christmas cards to send. I have 75 emails awaiting my replies and blogs to visit. We're out of trash bags and the refrigerator is finally void of leftovers. A visit to the grocery looms.

Hope someone else will take care of all that as I'm on vacation. Seems like a sin to spend my time doing anything but piddling around, reading, watching football, and reruns of Lost Season four and five. (Have to get ready for when the show's final season begins in February.) Next week brings routine. This week I remain true to the art of avoiding any semblance of work. Even forgetting the route to the YMCA.

This morning I leisurely wrote several pages in my journal, thinking about the past year. Mused about what this new year might bring for those close to my heart -- their woes and their joys. Thought about whether a discussion might be warranted with my husband regarding his choice of gift for me - like was a gift certificate to get the windows tinted on my seven year old car really something he thought I'd want? And then...

I took a nap.

Sort of like this one that someone happened to capture on December 26, my favorite day of the year. Now, I think I need another cookie. And maybe a margarita.

I'll close out my 2009 year of blogging with a couple shots of the sunset last night. Beautiful site.

May you all enjoy a very Happy New Year! To 2010!

  1. I've bought Christmas cards half price for the last several years, have even addressed some of them...but have yet to send any out. And to think that I faithfully used to send 30-50, with a personal note in each! I'm wondering if everyone is finally deciding that there's much too much to do at this time of year that really doesn't need to be done at all?

I've enjoyed your posts so much this last year, and especially your comments, and look forward to more in 2010.

Oh, by the way, I didn't know you had a dog! What's it's name?

  2. I just sent off a Happy New Year package today. It makes me feel like less of a failure to pretend that I planned all along to send it after Christmas.

I love your post-holiday attitude. Next year, I'm coming to stay with you. That OK?

PS. I love your nap buddy.

  3. I sent cards, with personal notes, but didn't receive nearly as many as I sent...times they are a-changing.
Great looking beastie beside you; what kind and what name? My beasties want to know -smile-.

  4. I've been feeling the same way. I just today cleaned up the wrapping paper mess in front of the tree, and the diswasher is still filled with the plates we had Christmas dinner on. You go right ahead and be lazy as the new year approaches. Happy 2010!

  6. The Twain quote alone makes me laugh! What a great way to begin 2010~it was so nice to meet you in 2009. Blessings on your New Year, and your nap today is my plan for tomorrow.

  8. Well how else would you get re-charged for the new year?

  9. Bernie . . . bwah-ha-ha-ha. She cracks me up.

I have been lazy too. And it's cold outside. When it's this cold, I just want to hang out and do as little as possible.

But I'm supposed to come see you, aren't I? Do you have any energy you can share?

    Hugs, and happy new year!

  13. I love this post! So like me you are... I am as lazy as the day is long. I'd rather sit around gazing at my grandson watching yet another episode of Backyardigans while munching a "Cutie" than take a walk. After all that work, Gammie needs a nap...

  14. I've just spent an hour reading your blog after I discovered you'd joined mine! Love it that you're a writer and will tell me your stories--you do it with well-turned phrases and a delicious sense of humor...I'm still on slip-away time but will be back for more reads. Thanks for your visit and I'm glad to have you on board! You will brighten my days.

  16. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who can't seem to get my act together in this last week of December. My brain is fuzzier than chewed gum in a pocket full of lint. I'm skipping yoga this morning for no good reason, knowing that on Monday the routine will be waiting for me. I love the pictures, especially the one of you napping. What's the book on the floor?

Happy New Year to you, too!

  17. I feel the same way about the week between Christmas and New Year's. I do the bare minimum. But, like you, I'm going to have to go out and restock the fridge soon. I do love the slow pace of the last week of the year, though. It's very renewing.

  18. Oh!!! That was sharp and to the point(Bernie's Jab)...only mothers can get away with that. I love her, as I know you do and she you! Let Bernie speak to your husband about his present. :)

It is a wonderful time of year to wind down and relax, so don't feel quilty, just enjoy it!

    Happy New Year!

  19. Funny, I just posted sunsets too!! Maybe I feel like I'm fading or maybe I just long the the tranquility. Either way, that nap looks good! I think I'll take one, just read they add about 30% to your life, so I'm on it. Something tells me 2010 is going to be a GREAT year!

  20. Awesome post as always, Julie. I love the pic of you napping...you look so peaceful. :)

  21. Yea for the nap! Great sunset pictures also.

I have to confess that though I eagerly take notes prior to Christmas on hints about what to buy the Mrs., I have also started placing the reciept in a common area since she has and will return things that are not wanted.

It is a good thing that I realized her family all follows this practice so that my feelings are not crushed.

  22. Gorgeous sunsets--thank you! Never underestimate the power of a Good Nap; you deserve a little R & R!

Can't wait to read what 2010 brings you. Happy New Year!

  23. I have not actually celebrated Christmas in years other than baking a few obligatory cookies and sending them to my family (I do not generally accept gifts, though).

I do make a nod to my Japanese heritage and follow tradition for the new year, so I spend December cleaning everything and clearing miscellaneous debts and the last week cooking traditional foods.

My nap partner is a border collie/akita/black lab who is in desperate need of a bath!

  24. p.s.: how was the cookie and margarita?

  25. The cookie and margarita? Absolutely heavenly!

  26. Napping, reading, writing and eating cookies sound like the perfect pastimes to me. Dec 26 is my favourite day too although this year I didn't get my usual box of Turtles so had to forgo the 3 hour bath with a box of them on the floor, a book in hand and nothing but pure pleasure to enjoy.
Happy New Year Julie, and good luck with your novel(s)!

  27. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz. Not the content. The inspiration to go do that. My sentiments exactly! That's what this week is for. Sorry to be away so long. But I'm back. And hey, did you get a cutie new dog?

  28. Well rested, you're now ready to have that conversation with your husband, ja?

    Happy 2010!

  31. Looks like the perfect way to prepare for 2010...Happy New Year Julie! My NY's resolution is to send out New Year's cards instead of Christmas cards next year, just to switch things up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Napping with the doggie looked heavenly. I am glad to have met you in 2009! I love reading about things that will be in my life soon (older boys, boys leaving home, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Julie, that's my favorite way to nap - dog at one end and pillow at the other!

I've become lazier and lazier each year during the holidays - and enjoy them more and more.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think Dec 26th should be a mandatory cookie and margarita day with an imperative nap.....sounds like heaven to me. Instead I was off and out with everyone. I did enjoy their company but am so glad to be back to a normal routine today......:-) Hugs
Loved your Chirstmas present from hubby.....bet you only got one of them......LOL
