Tuition Sluts

The Rose Bowl is the only bowl I've ever seen that I didn't have to clean.
Erma Bombeck

I know many of you are not football fans, but I am. I have my specific teams like my Alma Mater -- Michigan State.  My parents lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin for 31 years and my kids attended Packer summer practice camps countless times. Packers are my pro team.

My husband, Bob, graduated from University of Colorado. I don't feel much loyalty there. But when my kids went off to college, Bob and I  found ourselves rooting for teams we never would have considered in a million years. Never did we picture our legs hooked together with a stranger or our arms swathed across the back of whomever stood next to us while we swayed and sang "Saw Varsity's horns off." Or that we'd say "Whoop!' after another Fighting Texas Aggie first down.

Then, there we were in Flagstaff, Arizona watching the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks take on the likes of Montana State while we counted as Louie the Lumberjack did pushups on a trampoline to match the score. Not to mention that although the school colors are navy and green, the athletic colors are navy and yellow - verboten to a green and white Michigan State fan. (U of Michigan is blue and yellow - oh, sorry. Maize, she writes with a sarcastic shrug of her shoulders. I don't like Wolverines.)

No surprise that when youngest son, Ian, went off the the University of Alabama, we became fans of the Crimson Tide. We've just had to face the fact that we are tuition sluts. We cheer for whoever is taking our money.

Banner year for Crimson Tide and Green Bay Packer fans. Tide plays for the national championship Monday night. Packers - three games from repeating as Super Bowl champs.

Tomorrow night Bob and I will wear our Alabama shirts and plant ourselves in front of the TV in the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame (basement.) After each first down, we will shake our shakers on the Roll Tide count.

First Down Alabama - Roll Tide.

Just sayin'.

  2. Oh, dear. Knowing who the Packers' opponent will be next week, I hope you will forgive me for rooting for the visiting team. Should be a good game, though. If it's anything like the one played in negative temperatures a few years ago, we'll have to start calling it the...Froze Bowl ; )

  4. I'm afraid I'm an even bigger slut than you are. I not only cheer for the team that cashes my checks but for any team where I know someone who knows someone. I will be cheering for Alabama because Ian goes there just as I have since he was a freshman.

  5. So just to irritate a coworker another asked about what Crimsom Tide meant, I thought it was the following in color.

  6. Just found your site, and I had to save it to my blog list based on the very 1st post I read - you are hilarious!

I felt a kindred spirit here even though I'm a Southern Miss fan :) I currently live on the west side of Phoeinix. Have to add Geaux Tigers & War Eagle! Despite the fact that both of my children are Bama fans...

  12. Gator alum here but when any SEC team plays in a championship that's who we cheer. We think it is the toughest schedule and that SEC representative speaks volumes!

  13. GO PACK GO!
That said, I totally get cheering for the team getting the tuition check.

  14. Screw LSU!

  15. This is a bit foreign to me, but I have never thought to support any team other than the one that I grew up with.

  16. I'm among those not interested in sports. For me I don't see what the payoff is... one team wins the other loses but nothing is final, next year they do it all over again. Now if they did that ancient Aztec game, like where the losing team is put to death... hmmm, well no.

Golf is another one; I tried it once and was bored to death. My sport, for a couple of years anyway, was skydiving. Now on THAT sport you really put something on the line!

  17. I hope you enjoyed the game. This is my first visit to your blog and I've spent some time browsing through your earlier entries. I'm so glad I did that. You've created a great spot to visit and I really enjoyed the time I spent here. I'll definitely be back. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  19. HA HA HA! Love it! Roll they did just like a Tsunami and I was jumping up and down and cheering them on! I love that Tide!
Of course UT Vols are my # 1 college team, followed by Oklahoma State then Alabama. You know what a Titans fan I am but we haved loved watching these young QB's this year! We've been rooting for Cam Newton,Tim Tebow, Matthew Stafford and we loved Flynn's performance with the Packers the other day. I'm hoping The Pack makes it back to the Super Bowl and would love to see The Broncos go too!
So if there is such a thing as
    "a football slut" I'm a big'n ! XO

  20. It took my son becoming a basketball player for me to turn into a sports fan, but even then my enthusiasm was limited to his sport and his team. I'm bemused by the connection die-hard fans have with their teams, and maybe a little bit jellie since they seem to have so much fun.

  21. Used to be into the game before marriage and children - only the pros.

My husband sounds like you all. He LOVES college football, especially his alma mater. He isn't a tuition slut yet; maybe when the kids begin to enter college.

Will I ever get back into it? Hmmm... Don't know. I'm not as deeply rooted in the game as you are. Continue to enjoy!

  23. I like to think you're football fans so I don't have to be. Or something. I'm glad it brings you such fun, though.

Re: the online membership you mentioned in your comment on my post, I don't know if it makes any difference to you, but if you go in person to a meeting and sign up for a monthly pass membership, you get the e-tools for free, along with the option of doing in-person meetings. Just think of the blog material you'd get from that!
