What I Did on My Spring Break

Well, spring sprang. We've had our state of grace and our little gift of sanctioned madness, courtesy of Mother Nature. Thanks, Gaia. Much obliged. I guess it's time to get back to that daily routine of living we like to call normal.
David Assael

Remember this photo? And my post on my great housekeeper skills?

Tuesday, me and Ian - eight hours spent shoveling out the study where three boys have unwound and only spot cleaned for (dare I say?) years. Keep in mind, in the above picture you can't see all the junk (i.e. baseball uniforms, golf clubs, school work, old computer games and the boxes they arrived in, soda cans, underwear) lurking in the crevices beside the couch and computer - or the floor. Nor the mountains of dust on the books. I won't mention the old rug. The result?

Tell me it looks better. Please. I know it smells much better.

Also, youngest son is mad at me. After the first day of NCAA basketball playoffs, I'm 12 for 16. Ranked 143000 on ESPN. Told him when we picked our brackets not to mess with me. That I knew how to do this. He scoffed at my choices. Hmmmph. No scoffing going on today!

Also, spring has sprung in Texas. The Bradford Pears have been most beautiful.

Tomatoes once again planted, dauntless in memory of my previous thwarted attempts.
Cabbage salad soon available for dinner.

Had a pomegranate martini for lunch the other day -- and a nap in the afternoon.

With a clean study, a trip to the library, two miles swum at the YMCA, and 8 high school baseball games behind me, once more to the lake for the remaining two days of vacation, my copy of EB White's essays under my arm. Next week, back to work.

  1. TWO MILES swum? You are amazing, woman! I start getting bored after a quarter mile...so then I put the floaty belt on and run in the deep end...and then I do more laps...and then I think about having a latte...

Hey, it's very cool that the Relaxation Room has a floor!

  2. Yep, it's that time of year! Birds chirping in the back yard always gets me tearing out each room--and Yes! I know what you mean when you say IT SMELLS BETTER!

You're a workaholic at spring breaking...my, what you must accomplish when you're at work!

  4. What a great spring break, and an even better spring cleaning of your room! Look at all those books!

You're ahead of us with the bradford pears, though the tulips and daffodils are blooming. And you seriously can start tomatoes right now? Do you have to put them in the garage or somewhere at night? Vegetables aren't even on our radar yet, even here in Georgia! I'm jealous...hey, I think I'll head to the nursery tomorrow for some to keep in the kitchen til night frosts are done. Thanks for the reminder! We also need to get crackin' on the raised boxes we're gonna do this year instead of pots for the tomatoes and peppers.

  5. What a great way to spend a spring break. Your study looks amazing - makes me want come curl up with a book or two. It must feel good to have that done, and to know you've still got your basketball mojo.

Our spring break is a week away - and will be spent at the beach. Looking forward to some hubby time away from home and chores.

  6. Your study does have a dreshness to it Julie, but know what I noticed most...you have a bird clock, just like mine.
I don't have any blooming trees yet or tomatoes to plant, but I will soon. Enjoy the weekend, you should just read and relax after all that!

  8. Isn't it a great feeling to get a project like that done? Looks great.

You're so lucky to have such a long growing season. We are weeks from being able to plant anything outside.

  10. I want a spring break! And I want spring! The snow has melted, but it's two months until we can plant tomatoes. Well, I guess that's two months I can spend, um, cleaning and also preparing the gardens...and blogging.

  14. Julie, this is a really great post. You have a way of writing about everyday stuff that comes across as fresh and interesting. I'm totally impressed by your basketball knowledge - my eldest son played pro last year and I only just then realized what a three-pointer was!! I could never follow my daughter's soccer games either.
I can relate to the swimming though - two miles is pretty damn good.
Love the image of E.B White under your arm.

  15. I will tell you your study looks better! It looks all organized and sparkly now. Odd how bookshelves, being more or less merely storage places, can clutter up and get every which way, isn't it?
    Wonderful job you did!

  16. You make me feel lazy. To keep up appearances, I guess I'll start my Spring Cleaning Monday. And for good measure I'll throw in a few Pilates while I'm at it. LOL!

  17. after reading that little lot I need a bit of a lie-down.

So Jobhunter, would you like to become a Fridge Soup cook?
if so, email me at Friko's Musings, and I'll do the rest.
    Easy terms.

  18. Just visiting but want to tell you that your study looks great. If you have any energy left, you and Ian could come dust and organize my bookshelves...

It just snowed again in Denver, so I'm enjoying your pear blooms.

  19. Wow, your study looks incredible! I'll bet that felt mega-good once you had it all cleaned out.

And you go girl with your basketball playoff brackets! Woot, woot!

Tomatoes already planted? I'm jealous. No planting going on here today due to our gigantica snowstorm. Maybe next weekend... I'm a big believer in HOPE. :-)

Enjoy your last two days of vacation at the lake!!!

  20. Great job of Feng Shui in your study! I think that it's really important to clean, rearrange and clear clutter, every season. Keeps the good energy flowing! And I love to swim, too. Two miles is great!
    Cheers!

  27. The room looks great! I just want to browse that bookcase, choose a book and curl up on the couch. Maybe with a pomegrante martini.

  28. You were busy! And then you got Sunday to re ist out at the lake, right?

And that study! Why, you could have a full-on decorating event in there. Think of the possibilities. A real writing study!
