...and the women gathered...

[W]hen you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally
A report on my college road trip with youngest son is in the works, but not quite ready for a reader's eye. So much emotion building in me regarding the upcoming absence of children in my home. My grieving smacked me in the face. I'm also stumped for the perfect quote today. Been looking for an hour or more to find the perfect rune for how women gather -- one that might focus on how women support one another. Watch out for each other. The quilting bee. Anyone come across one, please send it to me.

I returned from the road trip and after two baseball games fell right into the wedding shower for my oldest's bride-to-be. What fun we had.

My friend, Savannah, and the Bunco Bitches outdid themselves. Check out this apron Linda made and all the attached kitchen accouterments they collected. Try to see how her necklace is made from corn on the cob picks. (First picture probably a better avenue.) And, yes, all those women on the apron material do have fruit for butts.

Champagne punch. Petit fours. Chicken, fruit, pasta, and green salads. All the lovely touches made this day very special for the bride and made me most grateful for the women who brought us together for the day.

With genuine appreciation, I thank you.

  1. What wonderful kind friends you have Julie and how fortunate for the bride to become a part of their lives through her future MIL......I am wishing her and your son much happiness.

Oh I can tell you are already lonesome for your youngest when he goes to college....you will survive sweetie but it will take time getting use to it.

I don't have a quote for you but I will say one should always keep her women friends close as they will always be there for you and in my experience will never let you down. We really do need each other......:-) Hugs

  4. What a fun gift your friends created! I can't wait to see the lovely dress they helped you pick, for the wedding. That was a funny tale. I'm sure fun was had by all at this gathering.
Your sad feelings of an empty nest will disappear and you will glide into a whole new world of getting back to "You"...you have lots to look forward to, honest!

  8. Oh Julie! A childless home? You are uber mama with your house full of boys. I know my day will come sooner than I want it and I am grateful to mamas like you who remind me that it is all so fleeting. And that we should enjoy it whilst and when we can. Wow. Crazy to imagine that 6th grade projects are soon enough bridal showers and college road trips.

  11. Quotes for you:

    * Before there was Prozac, there were women gathering to... {quilt, cook, bond, whatever).

    * It is not so much our friends' help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us. (Epicurus)

    * We don't accomplish anything in this world alone ... and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something. (Sandra Day O'Connor)

    * Women take care. Men take charge.

  14. I LOVED that apron--the fabric was to die for! I want one just like it! I think I told Linda that, but just in case, tell her again! Those are my colors, too, for my new place.

The shower was really lovely, Julie. Chelsea is adorable, and one lucky woman to have your handsome son as her groom.

    Your Bunco Bitches are awesome.

  15. The shower looks lovely and the bitches worked hard and came up with beauty and thus turned into angels. You are rich in friendships, Julie. I think they are very important.

Jacob is near and maybe soon you can help take care of two little feet scampering all over the place instead of the four you have now (dog) And Ian will always locate near home. He picked Alabama which was the closest to home of the several he was accepted in, right?

  18. Such great friends you have--and such a beautiful future daughter! The very best to her and your eldest.

And doing the college tour, too. Quite a lot to pack into one spring....

    Here's to the Buncos!

  19. What an invaluable community you have going there with these beautiful women. What a lucky bride-to-be! I loved the apron idea! How perfect. And the cakes on the platter? ..... I'm still salivating.

I understand the grief thing, when children leave our nest. We know it's good for them, yet, it's what we know and do, care taking them. I don't have an answer, other than we will be supported by those around us when the time comes. And you already have a lovely community to lean on. Peace, sister!

  20. OMG, I love that apron. I don't know how you keep breathing through all of this, but you're doing it with grace - that much is clear in your writing. I love the title of this post and all it means.

I agree about all the apron comments.

  22. I almost envy you your Bunco gals. No, I DO envy you them, but not in a bad way!

You did a fine thing by pulling your future daughter into the circle - she's lucky, you're lucky....sounds like everybody is.

Let us know if ever you find that quote - and I'll keep an eye out for one too.

  23. What an adorable apron, and made with so much love. I too wish your son and his future wife all the happiness they deserve in their new life together.

I know the grief that a woman feels when her chick(s) leave the nest. I was so devastated when my only child left in 2004. The same year my beloved dalmatian died. What a horrible year... but you will rally round, and you'll begin to see how this next part of your life is for YOU, and trust me on this, you will begin to get excited about all the possibilities. As one of my favorite rings says... May Your Wildest Dreams Come True!!!
