Summer in a Hammock - Reading List

I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.
T. S. Eliot

'Tis time to post the summer reading list thanks to all your suggestions. I also included several from my shelf-to-be-read, plus my book club selections for the next few months. If you should come across a good read during the summer, pass it on. Meanwhile, read on, sip iced tea (sweet tea), and read on.

A book is like a garden carried in the pocket.

  6. Oh my gosh. I had forgotten about 20 Chickens. That is a great book! So many great ones here and several on my TBR list too.
I could not get into Divisdero to save me. I'll be anxious to hear if you like it.

  7. Wallace Stegner is, I think, my favorite author. His prose was the first that was so beautiful, so lyrical (in the middle of a very down-to-earth story) that it made me cry. I just hadn't known language alone could make me weep.

My favorite book of his is ANGLE OF REPOSE.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  8. Holy cow woman, that is one aggressive reading list!! I used to read ALL THE TIME when I lived in Ohio -- for some reason since I moved to KS last summer, I just haven't read as much. Maybe when I start working full-time again, then I will read -- maybe it's my stress outlet. LOL

  9. Enjoy, my dear. I just renewed my current book at the library for the 2nd time. I can't seem to find the time to get it read. I need a vacation. *sigh*

  10. Thanks for the list - I have noted it down. Mostly I get into the library and can't find a single author I have heard of, so shall now go in armed with your list! The book I intend to buy and read over the summer is Jack Kerouac's On the Road - I have been going to read it for years and never got round to it.

  11. Hi there,
Fragrant Liar sent me here. I love reading lists. I always get ideas from Amazon and other places and then reserve the books at my library. I have three sons too. Oldest only likes to read Sports Illustrated mags. But other two like to read although it is hard to get them to read in the summer. I am going to check out these on your list, especially the one from Lisa See.

  12. What a great list. Lots of books I don't know yet and now will be looking for. Another one to consider (isn't there always at least one more?!) is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I just finished it and loved it - a lot.

  14. Thanks for the recommendations! My summer reading includes "Middlemarch" by George Eliot and the Rabbit novels by John Updike. Sheesh! That man could write. Makes me wonder why I even try.
